The Milky Way is our home galaxy! It is a giant collection of billions of stars, planets, and moons all swirling together in space. Our Sun and Earth are inside the Milky Way. On a very dark night, you can see part of it as a glowing band of light across the sky.
The Milky Way is shaped like a giant spiral with long arms made of stars. Our Sun is in one of those arms, far from the center. The whole galaxy is slowly spinning, and it takes our Sun about 230 million years to go around the center one time!
- The Milky Way got its name because it looks like a splash of milk across the sky.
- There are between 100 billion and 400 billion stars in our galaxy.
- The Milky Way is so big that light takes 100,000 years to travel from one side to the other!
