A lunar eclipse is when Earth moves between the Sun and the Moon, blocking the sunlight from reaching the Moon. Instead of disappearing, the Moon often turns a beautiful reddish color! It is sometimes called a “blood moon” because of that spooky red glow.
During a lunar eclipse, Earth’s shadow slowly creeps across the Moon. A little bit of sunlight bends around Earth through our atmosphere and reaches the Moon. This light is red, which is why the Moon looks reddish instead of going completely dark. A lunar eclipse can last for a few hours, and it is safe to watch with your eyes!
- Unlike a solar eclipse, you do not need special glasses to watch a lunar eclipse.
- Lunar eclipses only happen during a full moon.
- Ancient people used to think a lunar eclipse meant a dragon was eating the Moon!
