A solar eclipse is one of the coolest things you can see in the sky! It happens when the Moon passes right between the Sun and Earth. The Moon blocks the Sun’s light and makes a shadow on Earth. For a few minutes, the sky gets dark in the middle of the day!
The Moon orbits around Earth, and sometimes it lines up perfectly with the Sun. When this happens, the Moon covers up the Sun like a giant lid on a pot. The sky gets dark, and you can see the Sun’s glowing outer layer called the corona. Solar eclipses do not happen very often because everything has to line up just right.
- You should never look directly at a solar eclipse without special eclipse glasses because it can hurt your eyes.
- A total solar eclipse only lasts a few minutes.
- Ancient people used to be scared of solar eclipses because they did not understand what was happening!
