Have you noticed that the Moon looks different on different nights? Sometimes it is a big bright circle, sometimes it is a thin sliver, and sometimes you cannot see it at all! These different shapes are called moon phases.
- There are eight main moon phases: new moon, waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full moon, waning gibbous, third quarter, and waning crescent.
- The word “month” actually comes from the word “moon.” You can track the moon phases by looking at the Moon every night for a month!
