A full moon is when the entire face of the Moon that we can see is lit up by the Sun. It looks like a big, bright, glowing circle in the night sky! The full moon is the brightest and most beautiful of all the moon phases.
A full moon happens about once every month. During a full moon, the Moon is on the opposite side of Earth from the Sun. This means sunlight shines on the whole side of the Moon that faces us. The full moon rises in the evening as the Sun sets and stays in the sky almost all night long.
- People have given each month’s full moon a special name, like the Harvest Moon in fall and the Wolf Moon in winter.
- The full moon can look orange when it is near the horizon because of Earth’s atmosphere.
- During a full moon, there is enough light to see your shadow outside at night!
