The first Moon landing was one of the biggest things humans have ever done! On July 20, 1969, two American astronauts became the first people to walk on the Moon. The whole world watched on TV as they took their first steps.
The Apollo 11 mission launched on a giant Saturn V rocket. Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin flew down to the Moon’s surface in a small landing craft, while Michael Collins stayed in orbit above. Armstrong stepped out first and became the first person ever to walk on the Moon. They collected rocks, planted a flag, and bounced around in the low gravity!
Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin spent about two and a half hours walking on the Moon.
They brought back 47 pounds of Moon rocks for scientists to study.
About 600 million people around the world watched the Moon landing on their televisions!
