Only twelve people in all of history have walked on the Moon! They were all part of NASA’s Apollo program. These brave astronauts traveled to the Moon between 1969 and 1972.
Neil Armstrong was the very first person to step on the Moon in 1969. Buzz Aldrin walked on the Moon right after him. Over the next few years, ten more astronauts got to walk on the Moon too. They collected Moon rocks, took pictures, and even drove a special Moon buggy!
- The last person to walk on the Moon was Gene Cernan in 1972.
- The astronauts’ footprints are still on the Moon because there is no wind to blow them away.
- They brought back over 800 pounds of Moon rocks for scientists to study!
