A rocket is a powerful machine that can fly into space! Rockets are the only way to get people and equipment off the ground and past Earth’s atmosphere. They are tall, pointy, and incredibly powerful.
Rockets work by burning fuel inside their engines. When the fuel burns, it creates super hot gases that shoot out of the bottom of the rocket. As the gases push down, the rocket pushes up! This is the same idea as blowing up a balloon and letting it go. The air rushes out one end, and the balloon flies the other way.
- The first rockets were invented in China over 800 years ago.
- Modern rockets can carry astronauts, satellites, and supplies into space.
- Some new rockets, like SpaceX’s Falcon 9, can fly back to Earth and land on their feet so they can be used again!
