Pluto is a tiny, icy world way out at the edge of our solar system. It used to be called the ninth planet, but in 2006 scientists decided to call it a “dwarf planet” instead because it is so small. Even though it is small, Pluto is still very special!
Pluto is made of ice and rock, and it is super cold out there. It has five moons, and the biggest one is called Charon. Pluto is so far from the Sun that it takes 248 years to go around it just once! In 2015, a spacecraft called New Horizons flew past Pluto and took the first close-up pictures of it.
- Pluto is smaller than Earth’s Moon.
- It was discovered in 1930 by a young astronomer named Clyde Tombaugh.
- Pluto has a big heart-shaped area on its surface that scientists can see in photos!
