A dwarf planet is like a tiny planet that goes around the Sun. It is round like a ball, just like the big planets, but it is much smaller. Dwarf planets are not big enough to push away all the other space stuff in their path, which is why they are called “dwarf” planets.
Dwarf planets are usually made of ice and rock. The most famous dwarf planet is Pluto. There are also other dwarf planets like Eris, Ceres, and Makemake. Some dwarf planets are very far away in the coldest parts of our solar system. A few of them even have their own little moons!
- Scientists know of five dwarf planets so far, but there could be hundreds more waiting to be found.
- Ceres is the only dwarf planet in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.
- The word “dwarf” means small, just like the dwarfs in fairy tales!
