Meteors are tiny pieces of space rock that burn up when they zoom into Earth’s air. They make a bright streak of light across the sky! People often call them “shooting stars,” but they are not really stars at all. They are just small rocks that glow as they burn up.
When a small rock from space hits Earth’s atmosphere, it is moving super fast. The air around it gets extremely hot, and the rock burns up in a flash of light. A meteor shower happens when Earth passes through a trail of dust left behind by a comet. Then many meteors light up the sky at once!
- Most meteors are no bigger than a grain of sand.
- Meteor showers happen at the same time every year, like the Perseids in August.
- If a space rock actually lands on the ground, it is called a meteorite!
