Comets are like giant dirty snowballs flying through space! They are made of ice, dust, and rock. Most comets live far away from the Sun in the coldest parts of our solar system. Sometimes a comet travels close to the Sun, and that is when things get really exciting!
When a comet gets close to the Sun, the heat melts some of its ice. The melting ice turns into gas and creates a beautiful glowing tail. The tail can stretch for millions of miles! The tail always points away from the Sun because the solar wind pushes it. After the comet passes the Sun, it flies back out into the cold darkness.
- Some comets come back again and again.
- Halley’s Comet visits us about every 75 years!
- A comet’s tail can be longer than the distance from Earth to the Sun.
- Ancient people used to think comets were signs of good or bad luck.
