The Yangtze River is the longest river in Asia and the third longest in the world. It flows about 3,915 miles across China from the mountains in the west to the East China Sea. About one-third of all the people in China live near the Yangtze. That is over 400 million people!
The Yangtze is home to some very rare animals. The Chinese alligator, one of the smallest alligators in the world, lives along its banks. The finless porpoise, a small animal related to dolphins, swims in the river. Giant pandas live in the forests in the mountains where the Yangtze begins.
