Zhangjiajie National Forest Park is in the Hunan province of China. It is famous for its thousands of tall, thin sandstone pillars that stick up out of the forest like giant stone fingers. Some of these pillars are over 600 feet tall. Clouds and mist often float between them, making the park look like a fairy tale.
Rhesus monkeys live in the park and sometimes come right up to visitors. The forests are full of old-growth trees, rare flowers, and giant salamanders. A glass bridge stretches between two cliffs high above the ground. It is one of the highest and longest glass bridges in the world.
- The park helped inspire the floating mountains in the movie Avatar.
- One of the tallest pillars was even renamed the “Avatar Hallelujah Mountain” after the movie came out!
- Zhangjiajie was the first area in China to be named a national forest park, back in 1982.
