Lake Victoria is the largest lake in Africa and the second largest freshwater lake in the world by area. It covers about 26,600 square miles, which is almost as big as the state of South Carolina. Three countries share the lake: Tanzania, Uganda, and Kenya.
Millions of people depend on Lake Victoria for food. Fishers catch a type of fish called tilapia and another called Nile perch, which can weigh over 400 pounds. Hippos, crocodiles, and many colorful birds live along the lake’s shores. Fishing boats go out every day to bring food back to nearby towns.
- Lake Victoria is where the Nile River begins its long journey north to the sea!
- The lake is not very deep compared to other big lakes.
- Its deepest point is only about 270 feet.
- The lake was named after Queen Victoria of England by a British explorer in 1858.
