The Great Lakes are five huge lakes between the United States and Canada. Their names are Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie, and Ontario. Together, they hold about one-fifth of all the fresh water on Earth’s surface. Lake Superior is the largest freshwater lake in the world by area.
Many animals live in and around the Great Lakes. Bald eagles, loons, and great blue herons hunt for fish along the shores. The lakes are home to walleye, lake trout, and over 170 other kinds of fish. About 30 million people live in the Great Lakes area.
