The Caspian Sea is the largest lake in the world. It is called a “sea” because it is so big and because its water is salty. It covers about 143,000 square miles, which is almost as big as the entire state of Montana. Five countries sit along its shores: Russia, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Iran, and Azerbaijan.
The Caspian Sea is home to a special fish called the sturgeon. Sturgeon eggs are used to make caviar, a very expensive food. Caspian seals also live here. They are one of the few kinds of seals that live in a lake instead of the ocean.
- The Caspian Sea has no rivers flowing out of it to the ocean.
- Water leaves only by evaporating into the air!
- People who live nearby use the lake for fishing, shipping, and getting oil and gas from under the water.
