The Baltic Sea is a small sea in northern Europe. It is surrounded by countries like Sweden, Finland, Poland, Germany, and Russia. The Baltic Sea is not very salty compared to most oceans. Many rivers flow into it, adding fresh water and making it less salty.
Seals, herring, and salmon live in the Baltic Sea. The Baltic Sea is also not very deep. Its average depth is only about 180 feet. That is much shallower than the big oceans. In winter, parts of the Baltic Sea freeze over, and people can sometimes walk on the ice near the shore.
- You can find pieces of amber washed up on the beaches of the Baltic Sea.
