Torres del Paine National Park is in southern Chile, near the bottom tip of South America. The park is named after three tall granite towers that rise sharply into the sky. “Torres” means “towers” in Spanish, and “Paine” means “blue” in the local language.
The park has glaciers, bright blue lakes, and golden grasslands. The Grey Glacier is one of the biggest. Visitors can sometimes see chunks of ice break off and splash into the lake below. Guanacos, which are relatives of llamas, roam the hills in herds.
- Andean condors soar above the mountains.
- These huge birds have wingspans of up to 10 feet, making them one of the largest flying birds in the world!
- Pumas also live in the park, though they are hard to spot because they are very shy.
- The park is one of the windiest places on Earth.
