The Black Forest is a large, dark forest in southwestern Germany. It got its name because the trees grow so thick and tall that very little sunlight reaches the ground. Most of the trees are evergreens like spruce and fir, which keep their needles all year long. It is about 100 miles long and 40 miles wide.
Wild boars, deer, foxes, and woodpeckers live in the Black Forest. The forest is also where the Danube River begins. The Danube is one of the longest rivers in all of Europe. People visit from all over the world to hike its trails and see its waterfalls.
- The Black Forest is famous for cuckoo clocks, which were first made there hundreds of years ago.
- The forest inspired many fairy tales written by the Brothers Grimm, like Hansel and Gretel!
- Black Forest cake, a chocolate cake with cherries, was also named after this forest.
