The stars are always up in the sky, even during the day! But we cannot see them when the Sun is out. The Sun is so bright that it drowns out the light from all the other stars. It is like trying to see a tiny flashlight when a giant spotlight is shining right at you.
During the day, the Sun’s light fills up our atmosphere and makes the sky bright blue. The stars are still there, but their light is too faint to see against the bright sky. When the Sun sets in the evening, the sky gets dark, and the stars finally become visible again. They have been shining the whole time!
- During a total solar eclipse, the sky gets dark enough that you can see some stars in the middle of the day!
- Astronauts in space can see stars during the day if they look away from the Sun and Earth.
- The brightest star you can see at night would still be invisible during the day because the Sun is so much brighter.
