The Sun is the brightest thing in our sky! It is so bright that you should never look directly at it because it can hurt your eyes. But why is the Sun so much brighter than all the other stars? The answer has to do with how close it is to us.
The Sun is a giant ball of hot, glowing gas that makes its own light and heat. It is about 93 million miles from Earth, which sounds very far. But compared to other stars, the Sun is super close! The next nearest star is over 25 trillion miles away. Because the Sun is so much closer, its light is much, much brighter to us.
- The Sun is actually a medium-brightness star.
- Some stars in space are much brighter, but they are so far away they just look like tiny dots.
- The Sun’s surface is about 10,000 degrees Fahrenheit.
- It takes sunlight about eight minutes to travel from the Sun to Earth!
