The North Star is one of the most important stars in the sky! Its real name is Polaris, and it sits almost exactly above Earth’s North Pole. No matter what time of night you look, the North Star is always in the same spot. That makes it very useful for finding your way!
Because the North Star is right above the North Pole, it does not move across the sky like other stars do. All the other stars seem to spin around it during the night. If you face the North Star, you are facing north. To find it, look for the Big Dipper and follow the two stars at the front of the cup. They point right to the North Star!
- The North Star is not the brightest star in the sky, but it is the most helpful for navigation.
- Sailors used the North Star to cross the oceans for hundreds of years.
- Even though it looks like one star, Polaris is actually a group of stars very close together!
