Venus is the second planet from the Sun and the hottest planet in our whole solar system! Even though Mercury is closer to the Sun, Venus is hotter because its thick clouds trap heat like a giant blanket. Venus is sometimes called Earth’s “twin” because they are almost the same size.
Venus is covered in thick, yellowish clouds that hide its surface. Under those clouds, it is incredibly hot, about 900 degrees Fahrenheit! The air on Venus is so thick and heavy that it would crush you. Venus also spins backward compared to most other planets, so the Sun would rise in the west there.
- Venus is the brightest planet in our sky, and you can see it without a telescope in the morning or evening.
- A day on Venus is longer than a year on Venus!
- Venus is named after the Roman goddess of love and beauty.
