Uranus is the seventh planet from the Sun and one of the most unusual planets in our solar system. It is called an “ice giant” because it is made mostly of icy materials. Uranus has a pretty light blue color that comes from a gas called methane in its atmosphere.
What makes Uranus really special is that it spins on its side! Most planets spin like a top, but Uranus rolls along like a ball. Scientists think something huge may have bumped into it long ago and knocked it over. Uranus also has faint rings and 27 known moons.
- Uranus is so far from the Sun that it takes 84 Earth years to orbit it once.
- It was the first planet discovered using a telescope, back in 1781.
- Uranus’s moons are named after characters from famous books and plays!
