Space is super, super cold! It is one of the coldest places you could ever go. The temperature can drop to almost minus 455 degrees Fahrenheit. That is much colder than the coldest winter day on Earth!
Space is so cold because there is no air out there to hold in warmth. On Earth, our air acts like a cozy blanket that keeps heat in. But in space, there is nothing to trap the heat. Near stars, though, things can get very hot. The Sun’s surface is about 10,000 degrees!
- In the shade in space, it can be hundreds of degrees below zero.
- But in direct sunlight, it can actually be very hot!
- Astronauts’ spacesuits have special heaters and coolers to keep them comfortable.
- Without a suit, you would freeze in space very quickly!
