A good neighbor is someone who is kind and helpful to the people who live nearby. Good neighbors look out for each other. They might wave hello, share food from their garden, or help carry heavy bags. Being a good neighbor makes the whole neighborhood safer and friendlier for everyone.
There are many real ways people practice being good neighbors. In 1972, the National Neighborhood Watch Program started in the United States. Neighbors work together to keep their streets safe by watching out for each other. Many neighborhoods also hold block parties, where everyone on the street comes outside to eat, play, and get to know each other. The famous TV show Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood taught kids about being good neighbors from 1968 all the way to 2001. Fred Rogers always said, “Won’t you be my neighbor?” to remind us that being kind to the people around us is one of the most important things we can do.
- The National Neighborhood Watch Program started in 1972 and now has thousands of groups all across the country.
- Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood aired for over 30 years and made almost 900 episodes about kindness and community.
- Many cities have a “Neighbors’ Day” or “Good Neighbor Day,” and the United States celebrates National Good Neighbor Day on September 28 every year.
