What Is a Map?

A map is a picture of a place seen from above. It shows where things are, like roads, rivers, parks, and buildings. People who make maps are called cartographers.

People have been making maps for a very long time. The oldest map we know about was carved into a clay tablet in Babylon about 4,300 years ago! Today, Google Maps has mapped more than 220 countries and territories around the world.

There are many kinds of maps. Road maps show streets and highways. Weather maps show rain, snow, and sunshine. Some maps show the whole Earth, and some show just your neighborhood or school.
