Memorial Day is a very special day to remember the brave heroes who gave their lives to keep our country safe. We honor this holiday on the last Monday in May. On this day, we think about the men and women who died while serving in the military.
Many towns have big parades with loud music and happy marching. Families like to get together for picnics and eat yummy food. Many people fly the American flag and wear pretty red flowers called poppies to show they remember. At three o’clock in the afternoon, many people stop and stay very quiet for one minute.
- Memorial Day is a wonderful time to celebrate being together and being free!
- The poppy flower became a symbol of remembrance because it grew on battlefields.
- Memorial Day has been celebrated since the 1860s, right after the Civil War.
