Long ago, things were very different from how they are today! People did not have cars or buses to take them places. Instead, they walked or rode in a wagon pulled by a horse. It was a very different way of living.
At night, there were no light switches to flip. Families used flickering candles or oil lamps to see in the dark. In school, children of all ages sat in just one room together. Instead of using iPads or paper, students wrote on small pieces of stone called slates with pieces of chalk.
Learning about how life was different long ago helps us appreciate what we have today. Even though they did not have video games, children had so much fun playing outside with friends. They played with simple toys like wooden hoops, jump ropes, and marbles.
- It was a very cozy way to spend evenings by candlelight!
- One-room schoolhouses had students of all ages learning together.
- Some families had to walk for miles just to get to the nearest town!
