Mangrove trees can grow right in the salty water along the ocean’s edge, which is something most trees could never do! They have many twisty, tangled roots that grow above the water, making them look like they are standing on stilts. Mangroves grow in warm, tropical places all around the world.

These special roots can actually filter out the salt from the ocean water so the tree can drink fresh water. The twisty roots help protect the land from big waves by slowing the water down before it hits the shore. Some mangroves can grow over 80 feet tall!
