The Arctic Ocean is the smallest and shallowest ocean in the world. It sits at the very top of the Earth, around the North Pole. For most of the year, a thick layer of ice covers much of the water. The water underneath is very cold, usually around 28 degrees Fahrenheit. That is below freezing!
- The Arctic Ocean is surrounded by land from countries like Canada, Russia, Norway, and the United States (Alaska).
- It is about 5.4 million square miles, which sounds big, but it is much smaller than the other oceans.
- Some of the Arctic ice melts and refreezes with the seasons.
