Greenland is the biggest island in the world. It sits in the Arctic, between North America and Europe. Even though it is called Greenland, most of the island is covered in a thick sheet of ice! This ice sheet is up to two miles thick in some places.
Polar bears, Arctic foxes, and musk oxen live on the island. Greenland’s waters are full of seals and whales. Huge icebergs break off the ice sheet and float out into the ocean. Some of these icebergs are taller than buildings.
- Only about 56,000 people live in Greenland, which makes it one of the least crowded places on Earth.
- In summer, the sun never sets for weeks, so kids can play outside at midnight.
- In winter, it stays dark for weeks!
- There are no roads between towns in Greenland, so people travel by boat, plane, or dog sled.
