Victoria Falls is on the Zambezi River, right on the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe in Africa. It is about 5,600 feet wide and 354 feet tall. That makes it one of the largest waterfalls in the world. The spray from the falls can rise over 1,000 feet into the air!
Hippos and crocodiles live in the river above and below the falls. Baboons and warthogs wander through the surrounding bush. Visitors can walk along paths on the cliff edge and look straight down at the roaring water. A rainbow often appears in the mist on sunny days.
- The local people call it Mosi-oa-Tunya, which means “The Smoke That Thunders.” That name makes sense because the crashing water sounds like thunder and the mist looks like smoke!
- The spray keeps the nearby rainforest green and wet all year long, even during the dry season.
