Mount Kilimanjaro is the tallest mountain in Africa. It stands 19,341 feet tall and is located in Tanzania, near the border with Kenya. Even though it is close to the equator where it is very hot, the top of Kilimanjaro is covered in snow and ice!
As you walk up Kilimanjaro, you pass through completely different worlds. The bottom has tropical rainforest full of monkeys and colorful birds. Higher up, there are open fields and rocky desert. At the very top, there are glaciers.
- Kilimanjaro is actually a volcano with three cones.
- The tallest cone is called Kibo.
- Scientists say it is dormant, which means it is sleeping but not dead.
- The last major eruption was about 360,000 years ago.
- Sadly, the glaciers at the top are getting smaller every year because of warmer temperatures around the world.
