Mount Fuji is the tallest mountain in Japan. It stands 12,389 feet tall and is a volcano. It has a beautiful, almost perfect cone shape with snow on top. You can sometimes see it from Tokyo, which is about 60 miles away.
Mount Fuji is very special to the people of Japan. Artists have been painting pictures of it for hundreds of years. The mountain is surrounded by five beautiful lakes. Scientists say it is still an active volcano, which means it could erupt again someday.
- Mount Fuji last erupted in 1707.
- That eruption lasted for about two weeks and covered the city of Edo (now called Tokyo) in ash!
- Every summer, about 300,000 people hike to the top.
- Most climbers start at night so they can watch the sunrise from the summit.
