The Himalayas are the tallest mountain range on Earth. They stretch across five countries in Asia: India, Nepal, Bhutan, China, and Pakistan. The name “Himalaya” means “home of snow” in an ancient language called Sanskrit. Mount Everest, the tallest mountain in the world, is part of this range.
The Himalayas have more than 100 peaks that are taller than 24,000 feet. Snow leopards live in the Himalayas. They have thick, spotted fur and big, padded paws that work like snowshoes. Red pandas also live in the forests on the lower slopes, munching on bamboo.
- The mountains are still growing a tiny bit each year because two huge pieces of Earth’s crust keep pushing into each other!
- Rivers that start in these mountains provide water to billions of people.
- The Himalayas are so tall that they block cold winds and affect the weather for all of Asia.
