Zanzibar is a group of islands off the coast of Tanzania in East Africa. The biggest island is called Unguja, and that is where most people live. The islands sit in the warm Indian Ocean, and the weather is hot and sunny for most of the year.
Zanzibar is famous for growing spices like cloves, cinnamon, and black pepper. People call it the Spice Island because the air smells sweet and spicy. The Zanzibar red colobus monkey lives only on these islands. It has a fluffy reddish coat and a funny face.
- Long ago, traders from Africa, Arabia, and India came to Zanzibar to buy and sell spices, which is why the island has a mix of different foods and traditions.
- In the old part of Zanzibar City, called Stone Town, the buildings have giant wooden doors carved with beautiful designs.
- Some of these doors are hundreds of years old!
