The Maldives is a country made up of about 1,200 tiny islands in the Indian Ocean, south of India. The islands are so flat that the highest point in the whole country is only about eight feet above the sea. That is shorter than most ceilings in your house!
The islands sit on top of coral reefs, and the water around them is crystal clear. You can see colorful fish, manta rays, and whale sharks swimming below the surface. Whale sharks are the biggest fish in the ocean, but they are gentle and eat only tiny plants and animals.
- About 200 of the islands have people living on them.
- Many Maldivian people travel between islands by boat.
- Some beaches in the Maldives glow blue at night because of tiny glowing creatures in the water called plankton!
- The Maldives is one of the smallest and flattest countries in the world.
