Madagascar is the fourth biggest island in the world. It sits in the Indian Ocean, off the southeast coast of Africa. It broke away from Africa about 160 million years ago, back when dinosaurs were still alive. Because it has been separated for so long, many of its animals are found nowhere else on Earth.
Lemurs are the most famous animals in Madagascar. There are over 100 different kinds of lemurs, from tiny mouse lemurs the size of your fist to big indri lemurs that sing loud songs through the forest. Chameleons also love Madagascar. More than half of all chameleon species in the world live here.
- Madagascar has rainforests, deserts, and tall baobab trees with huge fat trunks that store water inside.
- Some baobab trees are over 1,000 years old!
- The island is also home to bright red tomato frogs and the long-nosed tenrec, a spiky little animal that looks like a hedgehog.
