Hawaii is a group of eight main islands in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. It is the 50th state of the United States. The islands were made by volcanoes that erupted under the sea millions of years ago. One volcano, called Kilauea, is still active and sometimes sends lava flowing into the ocean.
Hawaii has warm weather all year long and beautiful beaches with white, black, and even green sand. The green sand comes from a special mineral inside volcanic rock. Humpback whales swim to Hawaii every winter to have their babies in the warm water. Hawaii is also home to the nene, a rare goose that lives only on these islands.
- The Hawaiian state fish is called the humuhumunukunukuapuaa.
- That long name means “fish with a snout like a pig” in the Hawaiian language!
- People in Hawaii greet each other by saying “aloha.” Hawaii is the most isolated group of islands in the world, sitting more than 2,000 miles from the nearest continent.
