The Statue of Liberty stands on a small island in New York Harbor. It was a gift from France to the United States in 1886. The statue shows a woman holding a torch in one hand and a tablet in the other. The tablet has the date July 4, 1776, which is when America declared independence.

The statue is made of copper on the outside and iron on the inside. It is 151 feet tall from base to torch, and with the pedestal it reaches 305 feet. That is about as tall as a 22-story building. The copper was once shiny like a penny, but over time it turned green from the weather.

The Statue of Liberty stands on Liberty Island in New York Harbor. The island is between New York and New Jersey. People take a ferry boat to visit the statue. From the crown, you can see the tall buildings of New York City across the water.
