Christ the Redeemer is a giant statue of Jesus that stands on top of Mount Corcovado in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It was finished in 1931 and took nine years to build. The statue is 98 feet tall, and it stands on a base that is 26 feet high. That makes the whole thing about as tall as a 12-story building.
The statue is made of concrete and covered with thousands of tiny triangle-shaped tiles called soapstone. Its arms stretch out 92 feet wide, almost as long as a basketball court. People ride a small train up the steep mountain to visit it.
- From the top, you can see the whole city of Rio, the beaches, and the ocean!
- About two million people visit Christ the Redeemer every year.
- Lightning strikes the statue several times a year, and workers have to fix the tiles when they chip off.
