The Sahara Desert is in northern Africa. It is the largest hot desert in the world. It is almost as big as the entire United States! The Sahara stretches across 11 different countries, from the Atlantic Ocean to the Red Sea.
Fennec foxes live in the Sahara. They have huge ears that help them hear prey underground and stay cool. Camels, scorpions, and addax antelope also survive there. People called the Tuareg have lived in the Sahara for thousands of years. They wear blue robes and are known as the “blue people of the desert.”
- During the day, the Sahara can reach over 130 degrees Fahrenheit.
- That is hot enough to fry an egg on the sand!
- But at night, the temperature can drop below freezing.
- The Sahara has giant sand dunes that can be as tall as a 50-story building.
- Wind blows the sand into beautiful shapes.
