Sally Ride was the very first American woman to fly in a rocket ship! She loved science and math and worked very hard to learn about the stars and planets. Sally showed us that girls can be great astronauts!
In 1983, Sally became the first American woman to travel to space on the Space Shuttle Challenger! In space, she floated around like a balloon because there is no gravity. She helped run a big robotic arm outside the space shuttle to grab satellites. When she came back to Earth, she wrote books and started programs to teach kids, especially girls, all about science.
