Gerty was born in 1896 in Prague, which is now in the Czech Republic. She loved science from a very young age and worked hard to study it in school. She met her husband Carl in medical school, and they became a wonderful science team! Together, they moved to the United States to continue their important research.
Gerty and Carl were super curious about how our bodies turn food into energy so we can run, play, and grow strong. After many careful experiments, they figured out exactly how our muscles store sugar and change it into energy! This process is now known as the “Cori cycle.” In 1947, Gerty became the very first American woman to win the Nobel Prize in science!
