Ducks are birds that love to swim in ponds and puddles. Their feathers are waterproof, so they stay dry even when swimming! A baby duck is called a duckling.
Ducks have flat bills and webbed feet that help them paddle through water. Boy ducks often have bright, colorful feathers, while girl ducks are usually brown. They waddle when they walk on land because their legs are set wide apart.
Ducks eat bugs, plants, and seeds. They can dip their heads under water to find food on the bottom of ponds. Ducks use their flat bills to filter food out of the water and mud.
- Ducks say “quack quack” but only the girl ducks actually quack!
- Boy ducks make a softer sound.
- Baby ducklings can swim right after they hatch.
- A duck’s feathers have a special oil that keeps water from soaking through.
