The lion is one of the most powerful animals in Africa! Lions are often called the “king of the jungle,” but they actually live on big grassy plains called savannas. They are the only cats that live together in groups, and those groups are called prides. A pride is like a lion family, and it can have up to 30 lions!
Lions have golden-brown fur that helps them blend into the tall grass. Male lions have a big, fluffy mane around their head and neck that makes them look extra strong! Female lions, called lionesses, do not have manes. Lions are big cats and can weigh as much as 500 pounds. They have sharp claws and powerful legs for running fast.
- A lion’s roar is so loud you can hear it from five miles away!
- Baby lions are called cubs, and they love to play and wrestle with each other.
- Lions are the only cats that live in groups, and they take care of each other like a big family.
- Even though lions are called kings of the jungle, they almost never live in jungles at all!
