Reindeer live in cold, snowy places and have big, fuzzy antlers on their heads. They are the only deer where both boys and girls grow antlers! Reindeer are strong animals built for life in the snow.
Reindeer have thick fur that keeps them warm in freezing weather. They have special hooves that work like snowshoes to help them walk on top of the snow. Their big antlers can grow back every year after they fall off.
Reindeer eat plants, grass, and a spongy plant called lichen. In winter, they use their hooves to dig through the snow to find food. Reindeer live in large groups called herds and travel long distances to find things to eat.
- Baby reindeer can stand up and walk on the same day they are born.
- Reindeer noses warm up the cold air before it goes into their lungs.
- In some parts of the world, people have used reindeer to pull sleds for thousands of years!
