The giraffe is the tallest animal in the whole world! These gentle giants can be as tall as a two-story building. Giraffes use their super long necks to reach leaves at the very top of trees that no other animal can get to. They live in Africa and are one of the coolest animals on the planet!
Giraffes have long legs, a very long neck, and brown patches all over their light-colored body. No two giraffes have the same pattern of patches, just like your fingerprints are unique to you! They have big, dark brown eyes with long eyelashes and tiny horns on top of their heads called ossicones. Giraffes also have a super long tongue that is dark purple and can be up to 18 inches long!
- Baby giraffes can stand up and start walking just one hour after they are born!
- Giraffes only need about 30 minutes of sleep each day, and they often sleep standing up.
- A giraffe’s heart is two feet long and weighs about 25 pounds because it has to pump blood all the way up that long neck.
- Even though their necks are super long, giraffes have the same number of neck bones as you do — just seven!
